This weeks tutorial is rather a long one but the result is these stunning peyote stitch cross earrings. This was a request from a follower in light of Easter approaching. The request was actually for a peyote triangle with crosses in a size that could be worn as earrings. Once I sat to work on this pattern I soon found that a) making crosses in beads is harder than it looks and b) in order to get sufficient detail in the crosses they needed to be a reasonably good size making them unsuitable to put into a cross.
The result is a bigger than usual free tutorial but I am rather pleased with how they came out.
The video tutorial is linked below so I will just cover a few basics first.
Beads and Supplies
For this tutorial I have used :
- Size 11 Delica in 24ct Gold Plate (DB031)
- Size 11 Delica in Purple Iris (DB004)
- Size 11 Delica in Transparent Rose Gold (DB115)
- Size 11 Delica in Duracoat Dark Orchid (DB2139)
- Miyuki Gold beading thread
- A beading needle
- Gold plated wire guardians
- Gold plated earring wires

Colour Options
I just want to quickly cover my reasoning behind my bead colour choices. I have deliberately chosen lighter colours for the centre of the beading (ie, the shiny gold and light purple) because in my mind, they represented the cross. The darker purple surround and rose gold beads, to me are just the background to the cross. The more muted colours around the surround of the inner cross allows in to stand out.
If you are choosing your own cross colours then it may be worth bearing this in mind. I did try beading this without the dark purple and rose gold surround but the cross looked very small and struggled to hold it’s shape. Adding more beads helps provide overall structure to the piece
