Bugle and Bicone Bead Earring Tutorial – A Free Bead Weaving Pattern

Bugle bead and bicone bead free bead weaving earring tutorial

Today I am sharing this bugle, bicone and seed bead earring tutorial that I actually posted on YouTube at the beginning of October. I have had a very busy few weeks so I am playing catch up with myself.

I bought these gorgeous blue bugle beads earlier this year but honestly didn’t really know what to make with them. I am far more used to working with small seed beads so using these long beads really made me think a little differently about how I was going to use them. I have teamed them with sparkly bicone beads and seed beads to make these fancy drop earrings.

This is a video tutorial so I will share it at the end of this post.

Tools and Supplies

For this beading tutorial I have used :

  • Preciosa 7mm Silver Lined Dark Aqua Bugle Beads
  • Preciosa 5mm Indicolite Bicone Beads
  • Preciosa size 11 Silver Lined Seed Beads
  • Beading thread
  • A beading needle
  • Silver plated jump ring
  • Silver plated earring post with crystal stud

One word of warning about the bugle beads; they can cut thinner threads quite easily. I have pared every bugle bead with a seed bead to avoid the thread rubbing against the cut edge of the hole in the bead.

Alternative Colour Combinations

I have kept to icy blues and silver for these earrings but I think, given that they are a fancy design and Christmas is fast approaching, that the colours could easily be changed for a more festive look. I think making them in green and gold or red and gold would look fantastic, as well as making them a special pair of earrings to wear for Christmas parties.

They could also be made in a single colour, like all gold or all green. They would add a lot of impact to a busy outfit without the colour combinations overwhelming them.

You could also try the design with 5mm pearls instead of the bicone beads to bring a different look to the earrings.

Whilst I do show every step in making these earrings I would suggest that some prior knowledge of bead weaving is needed before making these. Making the bugle bead section around the bicone bead is a little fiddly!
