Peyote For Beginners – A Comprehensive Video Tutorial

A Pinterest pin for a beginners guide to peyote stitch

It has been a little while since I posted so I hope this whopper of a tutorial makes up for it. This weeks tutorial is a beginner’s guide to flat Peyote stitch. In this video tutorial I discuss the differences between even and odd count peyote and then show how to bead both, I then demonstrate various ways in which the beading can be increased and decreased and share how to weave in your threads at the end of beading as well as showing how to add more thread during beading in case you run out. I also show how to read a peyote beading pattern as well as discussing ways in which you can break a pattern down to make it easier to bead.

The nature of this tutorial means that there is no fun beading pattern to share but I hope that next weeks tutorial will show how to combine all the information in this video and apply it to an actual pattern. I have already worked out the pattern and its very cute!

I have linked the video tutorial below.

What Is Even and Odd Count Peyote

When you start flat peyote, rows 1 and 2 are picked up in the first step. Simply put, if the number of beads you pick up first are an even number then it is an even peyote. If the number of beads picked up first are odd then the beading is odd peyote. Both types of peyote have their place but I particularly like the symmetry that you get with odd count peyote.

Increasing and Decreasing In Peyote

As I demonstrate in this video tutorial, there is no one set way to increase peyote. How you approach the increases will vary depending on the pattern. It can be confusing so make sure you refer to the pattern diagram as you work and don’t hesitate to draw on it to work out your bead path if needs be.

There is also no shame in breaking a pattern down into bite size sections and doing some as brick stitch or returning to a side to do the increase once most of the beading if finished.

Decreasing in flat peyote is easy. Just make sure to leave the spaces empty where there are no beads!
