Week 23 – The 52 Week Illustration Challenge

I will keep this short today as I’m writing on my phone. My laptop has decided that it needs a rest so is stubbornly refusing to work and I feel totally lost without it. I can’t help but think that the snazzy windows update it gave itself has something to do with it. My phone is also playing up now!

Week 23 prompt was ‘Texture’. I’m pretty much glued to watercolour at the moment so I decided to try something I had seen a while ago to create a textured background. A very cool but bizarre technique saw me reaching for the cling film from the kitchen.

I drew and masked out the seahorse (this was attempt number 6 as I kept pulling the masking fluid off to quickly – lessons learned to wait till it is totally dry first) and then painted a wash of three blues, lightest to darkest. I did this twice to get the intensity I wanted and, while still wet, put the cling film on top. It needs to have bumps and crinkles in it as that gives the texture. Once dry you can lift it off to see all the lovely texture.

The seahorse is mostly watercolour with some colour pencil for added depth.

I’m off now to get infuriated with my laptop again………

  1. I love your sea horse. Such a calming and relaxing picture. Who knew cling wrap had so many uses! Good luck with your lap top!

      1. I hear you. I’d be lost without mine! I hope you get it fixed or a new one soon!

  2. Oh Hannah this is divine. Love the clingfilm background – and have tried it here in the cottage … it gives such a fabulous result. Love it for your seahorse. It looks perfect.
The seahorse is just magical. Breathtakingly so. The colours blend and all his/her little features are so beautifully detailed, but nothing shouts louder than anything else – which is how it should be of course!
You know I love your artwork, so I won’t bang on about how talented you are, … but you are y’know. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much Cobs. I was really pleased how it turned out although it wasn’t the original plan. Given how hot it is at the moment I am envious of him swimming in the cool ocean.

My sister is due her first baby in a matter of weeks – she had asked me for some artwork for his nursery and I am thinking that this little seahorse is it.

Apologies for the delay in replying. My laptop has retired (ie, broken) and my mobile is struggling with its now increase in usage. All very concerning for a total technophobe!

      1. Hello Hannah,
Just a note to say ‘Hello’, and kind of check on you and make sure that everything is fine and groovy in life there.
Haven’t seen you around for a couple of weeks or so, and since that’s not like you I just thought I’d pop by and say hello.
Hoping everything is OK there and life is ticking along nicely.
Sending you love ~ Cobs. x

      2. Hello, thank you for your message. My laptop died so I was using my phone for everything (Etsy, WordPress, browsing, EVERYTHING) and then………… Yup, my phone died.

        New phone arrived yesterday

      3. Ohh heckaroonie! What a pain in the rear end.
New laptop is on the shopping list, I hope. Cause you just can’t do ‘everything’ on a phone! Texting is bad enough. grrr.

      4. Seemingly I still press send too early! Anyway, I will hopefully be back to blogging and catching up with blog posts I’ve missed.

Thank you for thinking of me. Hope all is well with you. I have been working on something top secret this week – I should be able to show it soon 😃

        Love Hxxx

      5. TOP SECRET???

      6. Thank you. My daughter is so cross that it is another boy as I already have 2 other nephews and obviously a son. She will fall in love with him once she sees him 😍 Can’t beat new babies especially when I don’t have to do all the night feeds 🤣 Hxx
